Legion delivers apples to thank Pelican school staff

Staff and faculty at the Pelican Rapids Viking Elementary School received a surprise visit from representatives of the Pelican Rapids American Legion Post.
The visit brought a lift to the staff, as Legionnaires Ed and Donna Johnson and Chet Nettestad delivered apples–direct to the classrooms.
Above, one of the stops was the kitchen where Melissa Hayden, Trudy Gorton, Lisa Waller and Cindy Lyden were presented with apples.

Weninger graduates from basic training

Army National Guard Pvt. Brandin T. Weninger has graduated from One Station Unit Training (OSUT) at Fort Leonard Wood, Waynesville, Mo., which included basic military training and advanced individual training (AIT).
   During basic military training, the trainee received instruction in drill and ceremony, weapons qualification, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army doctrine, history, principles and traditions.
During AIT, the soldier completed the military police specialist course to acquire skills to provide combat area support, conduct battlefield circulation control, area security, prisoner of war operations, civilian internee operations, and law and order operations.  The trainee performed as a team member in support of battlefield operations, installation law and order operations and security of Army resources and installations.  Additional training included providing peacetime support to the military community through security of resources, crime prevention programs, and preservation of law and order.
Weninger is the son of Dawn C. Varnson and stepson of Dale B. Varnson of 53rd Street Northeast, Brocket, N.D., and Brian K. Weninger of Pelican Rapids, Minn.

The family of Donald Sillerud would like to thank everyone for the prayers and acts of kindness shown to us during this time of our loss. Thanks for all of the cards, memorials and food brought for our family; Pastor Tillerus for his concern, comforting words and prayers during Don’s illness and passing; VFW Post #5252 and American Legion Post #17 for the military honors; staff of the nursing home and funeral home for their help and support and to the North Immanuel Group who prepared and served the lunch after the service. In times like these we realize how much people in this community really care. God bless all of you as He has blessed us.

Spring GED Classes for Pelican

Spring GED classes for Pelican Rapids will begin on Tuesday, February 28 and go until April 26. This session will meet on Tuesday and Thursday from 4:00-6:00 at the Pelican Rapids Library. Students must attend the group orientation on Thursday, February 23 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. or they will not be able to attend classes in March.
One hour of the class will concentrate on GED tutoring and the second hour will consist of computer training.
Attendance requirements will be a part of this session and if students can’t meet the requirements they will have to wait for the next session. The scheduled class time will be allowed to vary if necessary to accommodate student’s work schedule. To register or for information contact Pat Puetz at 218-334-8441 or 218-565-2906.
The GED course will be updated with new tests starting in 2014 and students who have completed their GED by that date will be required to take all new tests.

Defensive Driving Class to be offered February 23

Minnesota drivers who are at least 55 years of age and have previously taken an 8 hour class can receive a 10% discount on automobile insurance by attending this 4 hour refresher class. The class will be offered Thursday, February 23 at 9:00 a.m. Class will be held at the Pelican Rapids Public Library. Please enter the side door.
The Minnesota Safety Council instructor is Jeff Morgan. Class size is limited. Call 863-2841 to register.

Local Student Named to CSB Dean’s List
Kendra Coleman, daughter of Jim and Chris Coleman of Pelican Rapids, Minn., has earned the distinction of being named to the dean's list for the 2011 fall semester at the College of Saint Benedict. Coleman is a sophomore biology major at CSB.
To be included on the dean's list, students must have a semester grade-point average of at least 3.80 and have completed 12 credits for which honor points (A, B, C, etc.) are awarded. Students included on the dean's list cannot have any “unsatisfactory” or “incomplete” grades for that semester.

Minnesota West Community & Technical College, Announces Fall Semester 2011 Dean’s List
Minnesota West Community & Technical College, would like to announce the Fall Semester 2011 Dean's List and to congratulate the following students for their outstanding academic achievement.
Students must be enrolled in at least 12 graded credits and earn a minimum 3.5 grade point average to be eligible for Dean's List Honors. Fall 2011 Dean's List Honors were extended to the following students from Minnesota West Community & Technical College.
Mark Kowalski of Pelican Rapids is on this list.

Nelson named to President’s List at M State
Christina Nelson, Vergas has been named to the President’s List for the 2011 fall semester at Minnesota State Community and Technical College. To earn this scholastic achievement, a student must complete 12 or more credits for the semester with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. The highest attainable average is a 4.0.
Christina is the daughter of Kim Nelson of Dent and David Nelson of Perham.
Nelson is a 2008 graduate of Pelican Rapids High School.

SCC releases names of students who graduated in most recent quarter
Southeast Community College has released the names of students who earned degrees, diplomas or certificates during graduation exercises following the 2011 Fall Quarter.
Each campus ceremony was held Dec. 16.

University of St. Thomas names Dean’s List
 Students from your area have been named to the University of St. Thomas 2011 fall semester Dean’s List. Students must post grade point averages of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale to be named to the Dean’s List.

Planning begins for red-letter, 15th annual Pelican Oktoberfest

Dates set for October 11-12-13-14, 2012

It will be a big year for the Pelican Rapids Oktoberfest committee, as it will be the 15th annual event in 2012.
Planning is starting early for the coordinators of the autumn festival.  The first planning meeting for the  event will be on Monday, March 5, 6 p.m. at the Pelican Rapids VFW club. Anyone interested in being involved is welcome to attend.
The committee recently unveiled its 15th Anniversary logo, which is pictured above.
