One of only a few known photos of the 102 lb, six-foot Lake Lida sturgeon–speared in December of 1948 and hauled in by two locals, Dick Swenson, left, and Harold Rice, far right. Center, game warden McArdle.Β

As one account goes, the pair were looking down the ice hole–Swenson jigging the decoy, and Rice with the spear. The β€œwaters became suddenly stirred up and murky.” Rice flung the spear, hit his target, and within a half-minute, Swenson literally broke the hinges of the doors of the spearing house to find another spear and enlist the help of Almer Ohe, who was in a neighboring fish hut.Β
