Sturgeons have a connection to Lake Lida through this six-foot-two-inch, 102-pound specimen speared in 1948 by Harold Rice (right) and Dick Swenson. This may have been the last sturgeon in area waters after dams obstructed the native fish from traditional spawning waters.
Sturgeons like this one may return to Pelican area waters with the removal of Perlican River dams, free waterways, and conservation efforts by the DNR.
