Merganser ducks returning to Pelican Lake caused the worst swimmer's itch outbreak ever recorded at a U.S. lake there last year. The birds can carry a parasite in their feces that infects snails, which then transmits swimmer's itch to humans.
Residents are asked to report any nests found in tree holes to help prevent the spread of swimmer's itch this summer.
