Six decades of ‘Duck Days'

When I was a kid growing up in rural Pelican, duck hunting was a big deal. It was much discussed in school, and the anticipation of opening day was great. Most “farm boys” took part.
I understand that, for a variety of reasons, that is not the case so much today. The flyway has shifted westward to the Dakotas, and the ponds of Scambler & Tansem are mostly empty of ducks today. Largely for that reason, I moved to N.D. upon my retirement from teaching. I am now passing the waterfowling tradition on to my grandchildren.
I believe that waterfowling is more than a sport. It is more like a lifestyle. It was once a big part of fall around Pelican.
